The Match to win it all

Last week our team went down to Hilton Head South Carolina for our spring break trip to play schools from all over the country. The three school we played were Ill. Wesleyan, Marietta, and Concordia.

Out of all these matches, Concordia was our hardest this is a team who has previously won their conference and made it a few rounds into the NCAA and was equal in skill to our rival school Messiah college.

In doubles, it was tuff both 1 and 3 doubles lost but were extremely close both being a score of 8-6 and in 2nd doubles which I was apart of we overcame a 4-7 game deficit and won the match in a tie-break 10-8

Now down 1-2 going into singles we lost at 1 singles, as well as 6 singles both, lost in 3rd set tie breaks however we won at 3 and 4 singles 3 singles was a 3rd set win and 4 was won in straight sets.

The score overall is now 3-4, and as I and my doubles partner are resting up to take our singles matches the tension is certainly building for both teams.  My partner goes first at 2 singles, and finally, I went at 5 singles our team can't afford to lose one more match, because the first team to 5 matches wins the overall match

My partner won his match in straight sets putting the score at 4-4, and it had to come down to my match to decide it.  I had already won my first set 6-3 and was up 3-0 in the second, but my opponent was able to bring himself up to win the second set 4-6, and finally, it came down to another 3rd set tie-break.

By this point, the sun was almost down completely and I wear prescription transitional sunglasses while playing and they take a long time to clear up so I was basically playing at night with sunglasses on and with no lights perfect right?  Each point in this final tie-break to 10 felt like it lasted an eternity with neither one of us giving in and using every ounce of energy we had left to give.  But eventually, I came out on top and won the 3rd set 10-5.

It was a match that I hope I will not soon forget it really showed how much improvements I have made over the past year, and it has pumped me up and ready to go for our conference matches so far.

Love-All: Why do tennis players say love and not zero? (Happy Valentine's Day)

Happy Valentine's Day! While people get chocolates, go on romantic dinner dates, spend a day with their love ones, have a magical day, etc. (I would have no clue what people do on Valentine's day.) We are here to talk about love. No, not that kind of love that you see in romantic comedies or in real life that makes us say "awww," but why 0 in tennis is called love. So sit back, eat some chocolates and continue reading to learn why. The number zero is called love in tennis since it came from a word in french called l'oeuf which means an egg in the shape of a zero. Not just any egg, a goose egg. Over the years, people began to overuse the term and eventually people mispronounced the french word and all of sudden, you got love-all to represent 0-0 in the tennis scoring system. (photo by Wornden Ly) There is also another theory that people uses the word "love" to show respect to the game and to the opponent. If you think about it, if we are teaching...

10 Not to Dos in tennis

Wornden's Racket of Choice...for now

I've been using several many different rackets throughout out the years, but my racket of choice is Head Graphene Prestige Pro. The Head Graphene Prestige Pro is consider an more control-oriented advanced player's racket. Most recreational players prefer to use a lighter racket with a blend of power and control, these are call "tweener" rackets. The Prestige Pro is a heavier racket weighing at 11.7 oz so it is a lot heavier compare to most frames. In exchange, the racket will give more plow through, which will help generate a heavy ball. Not only my racket is heavy, it also has a thinner beam compare to tweener rackets. Thinner beams allows for more flex on the head of the racket which gives more control since power is being absorb through the flex of the racket. The flex on the racket also helps with less vibration on the racket, giving a soft, plush feel when hitting the ball.  My racket also has a 98 sq. in head size, which allows for more control of directi...
